School bldg in dilapidated condition: Students attend classes under open sky in Khulna

Imparting lessons to around 175 students of Abdus Salam Mridha Government Primary School at South-east corner in Dhankhali area in Terokhada Upazila of Khulna district is badly hampered as the risky building became abandoned a few years ago, though it was declared abandoned in 2016.
Meanwhile, a teacher and a student became injured seriously due to falling plasters from the dilapidated roof of the school building
During a recent visit, this correspondent found that the teachers were teaching the students under the open sky on the school ground.
“We are taking classes under the open sky, as we have no alternative”, said a teacher of the school.
“I am very much worried as my child doesn’t want to attend classes in such an environment”, said Iva Rahman, a guardian.
Built on 50 cents lands, the school building developed cracks on walls due to lack of renovation.
The toilets of the school are not suitable at all for using, lack of plying ground and crisis of drinking water are also acute problems, said some guardians. Besides, there is no suitable way for coming and going for the students.
Members of the school managing committee said, as the school authorities informed the matter to the concerned authorities, engineers of the facilities department and the local government engineering department visited the school and after checking, they declared the building abandoned one year ago.
3 teachers including the acting Headmaster are now conducting classes.
Kazi Rafiqul Islam, the headmaster of the school said. We have been taking classes by keeping beat of lives amid risk of school building collapse, our kids are attending classes in sun under open sky even during this ongoing heat wave.
“We have submitted a written petition to the Upazila Primary education office for solving the problem but no action was taken yet”, said Kazi rafiqul Islam Kalam.
Turjo, Shuvo, Mukta and Sheuly, class five students said, Our PSC exam would be held perhaps in the month of November this year but we have not yet got our new classroom, we have to take lessons under the open sky.
“The authorities concerned should sanction fund on an urgent basis for construction a building for the school, meanwhile, teachers were asked to take classes in makeshift”, said Md. Kamrul Islam, Upazila Primary Education Officer.
