Students are under deadly attacks and they must unitedly resist

A new student alliance — Santrash Birodhi Chhatra Oikya – comprising 12 student organisations was formed on Friday on the Dhaka University campus to combat violence. DUCSU Social Service Affairs Secretary, who is also a joint convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, announced the platform’s name with placing a four-point demand, including legal action and expulsion of those involved in attacks on DUCSU VP Nur and his supporters. Their other demands include resignation of the DU Proctor, withdrawal of case against the injured, and ensuring democratic environment and students’ security on the campus. The alliance leaders said Chhatra League and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were not included in the association as the two student bodies are now involved in criminal activities or had been involved in such activities in the past.
Campus politics, and by definition its students, are not servants of any political party or government. They have the right to state their views openly without being beaten up by thugs who are members of political parties in power. The insolence of fronts like Muktijoddha Mancha knows no bounds as they think that because they are or were affiliated to the ruling party they have the right to incite violence. Worse, those injured have been made accused in an attempted to murder case. The police should stop kowtowing to the ruling party members and stop taking such cases which are obviously politically motivated. Their temporary masters maybe the government but ultimately they will have to answer to the people. It is a simple thing – all they have to do is say that such cases are nonsensical, but they lack the courage to do so.
The general students must know by now how alone they are in building a bright future for them. They are good as long as they become thugs of their political masters. University students are national assets but we have no political leaders who think about their future. In free Bangladesh all the good institutions are being systematically destroyed. Good education or good character building cannot be ensured by them.
The question is — how low we shall go and how incompetent we are as a nation?
