Student leaders demand immediate DUCSU polls

Leaders of different student organisations in a meeting with the university authorities on Thursday demanded immediate in Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) election, dysfunctional since 1990, ensuring peaceful coexistence of student bodies on the campus.
The university authorities held meeting with them to update DUCSU constitution.
Student leaders said it in the two hour-meeting held at Abdul Matin Chowdhury virtual classroom of the university where delegates from thirteen student organizations participated.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed student body Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders, brought to the meeting by university administration’s microbus escorted by assistant proctors, demanded peaceful coexistence of all student organisations on the campus, healthy political atmosphere for peaceful and fair DUCSU polls.

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) DU unit President Sanjit Chandra das said that they were very much optimistic to hold the polls with participation of all student organisations within shortest possible time.
Sanjit further said that ‘coexistence already prevailed in the campus as no one impedes regular students to enter the campus or holding regular activities’.
BCL DU unit General Secretary Saddam Hussein told The New Nation, “first of all, we sought the constitution to be written in Bengali instead of English. Secondly, we suggested committee to include a provision for ensuring the representation of female students in the organizational structure of DUCSU.Thirdly, we recommended to ban the anti-liberation, fundamentalist, war criminals and religion-backed student organizaions through the constitution of DUCSU.”
Chhatra Federation DU unit President Umme Habiba Benajir said, according to existing constitution of DUCSU, president, ex officio vice-chancellor of the university enjoy, more power than the elected representatives. So, it needs to amend the section and bring balance of power between the president and elected representatives.
She further said that as the election was hanged for more than two decades, they also proposed to ease the quantities of the candidates.
Chhatra Union DU Chapter president Foyez Ullah said, they are also urging to amend some of the sections of the Constitution and add some more secretariat post to make the constitution more democratic.
Former Chairman of Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh also convener of five member committee to update the constitution Mizanur Rahman said that student bodies recommended bringing some changes in the constitution.
The Law professor also said that they asked the student bodies to present their recommendation elaborately within next Monday in written from and after reviewing that they will submit the final report.
