Student hacked to death in Cox’s Bazar

A college student was hacked to death reportedly by a group of drug traders while he was campaigning for a ward councillor aspirant of the municipality election at Rumaliarchara in the district town on Friday noon.
The deceased was identified as AHM Tanveer Ahmed, 24, a master’s student of Cox’s Bazar Government College and University.
Eyewitnesses said when Tanveer was campaign for councilor aspirant Arshaful Huda Siddique, a group of ‘Yaba traders’ namely ‘Bashar Bahini’ obstructed them and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Later, locals took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Farid Uddin, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said police had initiated drive to arrest the miscreants who were involved in the knife attack.
7 Jamaat, Shibir men remanded: A Chittagong court on Thursday put seven activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir, who were arrested in Chittagong Railway Station area on June 23, on a two-day remand each.
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohiuddin Murad granted the remand prayer.
Police arrested the 210 activists from a hotel, run by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation. Though they claimed they had gathered there for an Eid reunion, police said they were holding a “secret meeting”.
A case was filed with Kotwali Police Station under the special powers act.
