Rabiul Alam :
Mahmudul Hasan Mishu, a second year student of Jagannath University (JnU) Film and Television Department was forced out of the examination hall on last Sunday over an allegation of causing an untoward situation in class earlier this year, even though the university authorities including the university VC issued him for taking part the semester final examination.
Prof Junaid Ahmed Halim, Chairman of Film and Television Department filed a written complaint against the student, stating that the student created an untoward situation in the class during the screening of a movie, that had “explicit” scenes on April 9, Even, at the time of filing the written complaint, Prof Halim also submitted a copy of the department’s academic committee’s recommendations on how the student should be reprimanded.
Following the complains, on October 22, the probe body consisting two assistant proctors – Md Mohiuddin and Shilpi Rani Saha recommended that the university authorities exempt Mishu from the charges which was based on evidence and eyewitnesses. According the probe body’s recommendations, JnU Registrar Md Ohiduzzaman issued an office order on November 17 which stated Mishu could attend his academic activities at the university.
“The university authorities permitted me, so I came to take the test. I was allowed to enter the examination hall and received my paper but suddenly, the Chairman with some teachers forced me out of the examination hall and threatened me for beating up by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists,”
Mahmudul Hasan Mishu told our JnU correspondent. “If I’m restricted for the examination hall by the dept. Chairman, why did the university authorities including Vice-chancellor issued a notice permitting me for the exam?” Mishu asked, alleging the authorities of harassing him.
However he claimed the movie is included in one of their courses and could not take the semester final exam due to Prof Halim’s direction, He [Halim] forced him to leave the exam hall grabbing my neck.
On 20 November, scheduled time for second examination was cancelled as this incident went viral on social media and many users criticised the chairman, even fellows of Mishu protested the decision brought against Mishu by the chairman, so authorities didn’t take the exam and finally postponed it with all kind of academic activities of the session.
Approached, Prof Junaid Ahmed Halim said he couldn’t talk to general journalists but the editor. If university office gave permission to Shuvo, then he should attend there. But as the chairman did not give him permission, he couldn’t join there.
Later, he claimed the letter that cleared all allegations against Mishu was not given at the right time. While asked whether he forced the student out of the exam hall, he did not respond to the question.
Meanwhile, JnU Vice Chancellor Mijanur Rahman said he made decision to let Shuvo permit in examination, as the chairman didn’t want him in exams hall so what he can for him. He further said he already talked with him and would meet with Prof Halim to discuss the matter on Sunday.
