Bangladesh Inland Water and Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Sunday freed a large piece of land on the bank of river Buriganga occupied by Haji Selim of Dhaka-7 constituency.
The BIWTA launched the demolition drive against the structures built by Haji Selim occupying the land on the Buriganga river-bank.
There were signboards on the property of Madina Maritime Limited in the name of Haji Selim’s elder son Solaiman Selim. Brick-made structures were built on a large piece of vacant government land there. Haji Selim also built a market there in permanent structures.
However, some of the local people alleged that the BIWTA had launched the eviction drives at many places while freeing the lands from the occupiers of river bank.
