More constitutional empowerment of the President and good governance are needed alongside strengthening the constitutional bodies towards building a sustainable election system in the country, experts opined at a seminar here yesterday.
They also stressed on the practices of democracy inside the political parties.
Political scientists, economists and researchers participated in the seminar jointly organized by the Policy Research Institute (PRI) and International Political Science Association (IPSA).
Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Chairman Professor Rehman Sobhan, former adviser to the caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan, CPD distinguished fellow Dr Rawnak Jahan, former finance minister M Saiduzzaman, former chief election commissioner A T M Shamsul Huda, adviser to the BNP Chairperson Inam Ahmed Chowdhury, former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Mohammad Farashuddin, Professor of Political Science of Dhaka University Dr Ataur Rahman, Sujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder and PRI executive director Dr Ahsan H Mansur spoke on the seminar.
Dr Manzur Ahmed, former education adviser of UNICEF, conducted the seminar while Dr Zillur Rahman Khan, Professor Emeritus of Wisconsin University, USA made keynote presentation.
Zillur Rahman said balance of power is obligatory for good democracy and that’s why he suggested for introducing two-tier based parliament.
Rehman Sobhan said without strengthening the constitutional bodies sustainable voting system is impossible as those government organizations have been politicized since 25 years.
He said the political parties of the country have to practice democracy inside if they want sustainable democracy.
Emphasizing on the necessity of reforms, Akbar Ali Khan said no caretaker government could hold election at this moment as the country is witnessing severe political divide now.
He opted for revision of the weak points of the constitution side by side with making stronger the constitutional bodies.
Echoing Akbar Ali Khan, Dr Shamsul Huda said free, fair and credible election is impossible without strengthening the constitutional bodies.
