Strong tremors were felt in port city and its adjacent districts around 5.07 am when most of the city dwellers were asleep.
Many panicky people gathered at the basement of their houses and came to their nearby roads after the tremor. It was a surprise wake up call for people across Chittagong in the dawn yesterday when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake jolted port city and other parts of the region, city residents said.
According to earthquake experts, it was one of the strongest earthquakes they have ever felt. There have been no reports of casualties until the time of filing of this report, according to fire services and hospital sources.
Jesmin Akter, a resident of Chandgaon Residential Area, told that she woke up her husband, mother and rushed down the stairs with them. “It was strong.” she added, The tremor shock spilled out on the streets in port city as well. It caused people to run screaming for open ground, seeking divine intervention for their safety.”We rushed out and saw the people were frightened and screaming crazily,” said Dr Nazrul Islam of Chawkbazar.
The Met Office recorded a strong earthquake early today at 05 hours 07 minutes 21 seconds (BST) having a magnitude of 6.07 on the Richter scale, it added.
