Dupchanchia (Bogra) Correspondent :
Hundred of poor and marginal string bean farmers across the upazila of Bogra district are happy with a bumper yield and good prices for the vegetable this season
The bumper production of the nutritious vegetable in this season was due to favourable weather conditions and timely supply of necessary agro-inputs in all upazila of the district.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said, aiming financial solvent the farmers of the area have brought around 40 hectares of land under string bean cultivation in the upazila this season taking necessary aid from the local agriculture offices from the very early of the month of January. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) provided the farmers with high yielding varieties of seeds, organic fertilisers, insecticides and other inputs to make the programme a success, source added.
While visiting the different croplands across rural area the correspondent found that farmers have cultivated the vegetable on their cropland and fallow land as it has proved more profitable than traditional crops and can be cultivated easily. They are seen passing busy time rearing the string bean and processing them to sell in the local kitchen market from the very early morning to late at night. Per KG of string bean is sold from tk. 33-35 against TK. 20 production cost.
Farmer Abdus Sattar , 64, of Gunaher village under the upazila said, “Earlier financial hardship used to haunt me round the year and I can not get a sound sleep for my miserable condition of the family.” “But now I am able to educate my children. Besides, I live in a brick-built house and use a sanitary latrine. This was possible because of profitable bean cultivation on my cropland.” he added.
An unemployed educated farmer Belal Hossain at Kamaru village of the upazila said, he was now self-reliant growing the vegetable instead of cultivating sugarcane or mustard in his croplands. Massive farmers are now growing the vegetable commercially to reap more profit as well as the wholesalers from different districts visits our local markets to purchase them and the crop here is sold at satisfactory prices, he added.
When contracted Dupchanchia upazila agriculturist Golam Mostafa said, the Department of Agriculture Extension advises growers round the year on how to cultivate the vegetable on their cropland successfully and they can be financially solvent easily. If the farmers show interest to grow the string bean vegetable, we will take more initiatives to make the programmme a grand success coming year, he added.
