Strike postponed at Ctg Port

Chittagong Prime Mover-Trailer Owners-Workers Unity Council on Friday called off their strike till 4 October at Chittagong Port.
They postponed the strike after a meeting with Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Iqbal Bahar at his residence on Friday morning.
Humayun Kabir, General Secretary of Chittagong Prime Mover-Trailor Workers’ Union confirmed The New Nation about the postponement.
An inter-ministry meeting will be held on October 4 with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader in the chair, to discuss with the strikers.
Due to the strike, a total of 40,259 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers were stockpiled at the port yards exceeding its capacity of 36,357 TEUs.
Earlier, on Monday, the council called for an indefinite strike protesting alleged harassment, fines and assault on trailer operators at load control centres at Daudkandi and Meghna Bridge areas on the Dhaka-Chittagong highways.
Earlier on August 17, the Roads and Highways Department issued a notice to check overloading on the highways through fixing the weight limit of highest 33 tonnes for each prime mover. Provision for fine was also kept in the notice.
