Staff Reporter :An intern assaulted a senior staff nurse and attempt to sexually abuse her in the Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital on Saturday afternoon.News spreading, all the nurses began to abstain from work, which they, however, withdrew after talks with the authotity at 8:30pm. A countrywide strike will be observed in all the hospitals from Tuesday if no action is taken against the accused doctor Rafiqul Islam Sujon, said Shabina Sharmin, President of the Bangladesh Diploma Nurses Association. She said that Rafiqul beat and sexually harassed a senior nurse at one stage of altercation over a trivial matter in the labour ward No. 17 of the hospital around 1:30pm.Jasim Uddin, General Secretary of Bangladesh Diploma Nurses Association said that the victim was admitted to casualty ward of the hospital.Brigadier General Zakir Hasan, Director of Midfort Hospital, said that the authority had already suspended Rafiqul Isalm for assaulting a nurse physically.A three-member committee headed by Doctor Lutful Khabir has been formed to investigate the incident.Other members of the probe body are Dr Ferdousy Begum and Dr Emranul Alam, he further said. Kotwali Officer-in-Charge (OC) K M Firoz said that the demonstrating nurses withdrew their abstention programme at night.
