Strict implementation of law is a must to curb crimes against women

CRIMES against women have been increasing alarmingly in the country due to downgrading of law and order, social disarray, masculinity manipulated by money and muscle and influence of alien culture. The saga of the development in gender parity and women empowerment have been distrusted when growing number of incidents of sexual harassment of women grab the attention of masses and the perpetrators go scot-free. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad on Wednesday reported that in September seven girls or women were raped per day, the highest in a single month since 2010.
At least 232 rape incidents were reported in September, a significant rise from 169 in August. Of the reported incidents, 15 were murdered after rape and 19 were gang-raped. Besides, there were at least 15 other incidents of attempted rape and 30 cases of sexual harassment. At least 521 women and girls had been subjected to violence in September while the number was 379 in August. Over 41 women and girls were murdered, 21 others assaulted and 17 abducted. Five of 13 women tortured for dowry last month died, the report mentioned. At least 19 women and girls committed suicide after being tortured while 29 died in mysterious circumstances.
The men’s perspective to women depends on social, political, educational and religious conditions. Undeniably, the Bangladesh culture has lost its own path and is adopting the culture that alien to the social and familial values of the masses. The crisis erupted from the two contrasting values’ competitions and the women have become the victims. The social power to protest the sexual harassment against women also eroded as the perpetrators are largely politically blessed and stay above the law. A social movement is due for reconstructing the society, where everyone should upright their dignity and respect. We must say the perpetrators must be brought to book whatever their political identities are.
