Speakers at a workshop have stressed for strict implementation of the anti-adulteration laws for greater national interests to ensure exemplary punishments to those responsible for food adulteration.
Pirgachha upazila administration organised the workshop on ‘Food adulteration, public health, morality, implementation of anti-adulteration laws and creating social awareness’ yesterday at its hall room under Upazila Governance Project (UzGP).
Pirgachha upazila chairman Alhaj Afsar Ali attended the workshop as the chief guest with Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Aliya Ferdous Jahan in the chair.
Upazila vice-chairmen Shah Farhad Hossain Anu and Manjuri Begum, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Dipankar Roy, District Facilitator of UzGP Jahangir Alam and representative of JAICA Aikan Kawakasu addressed as special guests.
Pirgachha Upazila Agriculture Officer Aftab Hossain, Upazila Sanitary Inspector Abu Sayeed, Kandi chairman Abdul Kader Mandal, Etakumari union chairman Dasizol Haque, Tambulpur union chairman Rawshan Zamir Rabu Sarder, also spoke.
Upazila level GO-NGO officials, heads of the educational institutions, professionals, representatives of the business, socio- cultural, political and professional organisations, human rights activists, civil society members and local elite participated.
The speakers expressed concern on flooding of the local markets with adulterated and chemical poison-mixed baby foods, vegetables, fish, meat, fruits, hotel and packed foods, adulterated and date expired lifesaving medicines and other foodstuffs.
They said consumption of adulterated foods has been increasing the extent of deadly hepatitis, kidney, heart and lever diseases, paralysis, cancer and pancreas ailments creating threat to the public health even after many years of consumption.
They demanded strict implementation of the consumers’ rights act and other related laws, anti-adulteration drives round the year, inclusion of anti-adulteration curriculum and complete ban on selling of adulterated foods mixed with poisonous chemicals.
They urged for banning false advertisements in media to attract consumers in purchasing adulterated foods and asked the administration and law enforcement agencies to stop selling commodities at higher rates than the fixed prices and cheating in weights.
The chief guest said the ongoing anti-adulteration drives will continue and called for launching social movement, involving every citizen, against food adulteration which threatens the next generations in becoming healthier citizens.
