High police officials at a street-corner ceremony in Rajshahi unanimously observed that strict enforcement of traffic rules besides creating wide-ranging mass-awareness could be the crucial means of freeing the society from road traffic accidents.
They mentioned that the country experiences many road accidents every year claiming scores of lives and injuring many others.
The total loss of properties in the accidents is estimated to be huge money.
They made this observation while inaugurating the traffic week-2021 scheduled to be observed from March 16 to 22 at Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman Crossing under Boalia Police Station in the city on Tuesday.
Traffic Division of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) is organizing the week with the theme “Road Safety and raising of mass-awareness” to mark the 100th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation, the architect of the liberation and the founder of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Large number of police officials and members, public in general and students and scouts from various schools and colleges joined the programme. RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique inaugurated the week through releasing balloons and festoons. Additional Commissioner Sujayet Islam and Deputy Commissioner Sazid Hossain also addressed the meeting with Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Anirban Chakma in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, Abu Kalam Siddique said utmost importance should be given on enhancing drivers’ skills, awareness on traffic law and tendency to obey law among the public in general for road safety.
There is no alternative to awareness to prevent road traffic accidents which create grave concern. Enhancement of competence and awareness of the professional drivers and others concerned is very important to this end.
If the drivers drive their vehicles carefully the existing number of road accidents could be reduced to a greater extent.
