Strict enforcement of tobacco control law underscored

Strict implementation of the Smoking and Using of Tobacco Products (Control) (Amendment) Act and amended Tobacco Control Act (TCA) can reduce consumption of smoking and smokeless tobacco products.
The views were expressed at an advocacy meeting organized yesterday by the Association for Community Development (ACD) on ensuring implementation of the tobacco control laws more effectively at Office of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in Rangpur.
Presided over by ADM Priyosindhu Talukder, Executive Magistrates of Rangpur district administration and officials of ACD participated in the meeting.
Programme Officer of ACD Asim Sarker Litan delivered power-point presentation narrating the present tobacco cultivation scenario, violation of amended TCA, health hazards of smoking in public places and consuming nonsmoking tobacco products.
He said every sixth adult death is being caused by tobacco in Bangladesh where 58 percent male and 29 percent female are consuming cigarettes and bidi while 28 percent male and 26 percent female are consuming smokeless tobacco products.
Terming tobacco as the biggest human killer, he expressed concern over the fact that seven percent of the 13 to 15 year age group adolescents are getting addicted to smoking annually creating a real health hazard for the next generation.
He also narrated as how the tobacco companies have been conducting publicity through various advertisements and distributing prizes or gifts in various forms for spreading business and increasing sale of tobacco products violating the law.
Executive Magistrates Md. Ashraful Siddik, Israt Sadiya Sumi, Mintu Biswas and ABM Khalid Hossain Siddik addressed the meeting, among others.
