Speakers stressed of strengthening the local government bodies to accelerate the process of institutionalisation of democracy and enhance participation of the grassroots people in attaining sustainable national development.
The opinion came at a ceremony organised by District Federation Coordination Committee (DFCC) at Nilphamari unit office of RDRS Bangladesh to accord reception to newly elected 61 union chairmen and members on Tuesday afternoon.
RDRS Bangladesh extended cooperation to the DFCC under its Strengthening Community-based Organisations for Pro-poor Democratic Governance (SCOPE) Project in a reception to newly elected public representatives.
Four chairmen and 57 members of different union parishads under six upazilas in Nilphamari district were accorded reception on the occasion. Programme Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh for Nilphamari KM Rashedul Arefin attended the ceremony as the chief guest with Assistant General Secretary of Nilphamari DFCC Arati Rani Roy in the chair.
Projecjt Coordinator of the SCOPE Project of RDRS Bangladesh Abdullah Al Mamun and Assistant Project Coordinator KM Akhterul Alam were present as special guests.
The chief guest asked the public representatives to put proper importance on listening the problems of the common people and fulfill their hopes and aspirations by strengthening communication with the administrations and departments concerned.
Arati Rani Roy suggested the newly elected public representatives to enhance participation of the common people in running activities of the union parishads to speed up rural uplift and strengthen democratic practices at the grassroots levels.
Building corruption-free society for next generations emphasised: Anti-corruption activists have stressed on building a corruption free society for the next generations through launching an effective movement involving the common people.
They expressed the views at the quarterly coordination meeting of District Corruption Prevention Coordination Committee held on Tuesday afternoon at the Training Centre of RDRS Bangladesh in the city.
The Combined District Office of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and RDRS Bangladesh assisted in arranging the meeting under the Justice Reform and Corruption Prevention (JRCP) project being funded German Development Cooperation.
Vice-president of District Corruption Prevention Committee (CPC) Rezaul Islam Shuja presided over the meeting participated by members of the district CPC, Presidents and General Secretaries of its upazila units. Deputy Director of Rangpur District Combined Office of ACC Mozahar Ali Sarder attended the meeting as chief guest.
General Secretary of District CPC Akbar Hossain discussed organisational issues and future plans of corruption prevention activities in the meeting.
Presidents and General Secretaries of its upazila units presented their activities in preventing corruption, limitations and problems.
Mozahar Ali Sarder appreciated the activities of members of the district and upazila level CPCs in engaging local communities to create public awareness against corruption.
“The next generations would definitely remember noble initiatives of the anti-corruption activists of the present days for launching anti-corruption movement to build a future society free from corruption,” he said.
Rezaul Islam Shuja lauded of anti-corruption activists in creating public sentiment against corruption with a view to building a corruption free society.
