Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday asked senior police officials to strengthen security for the foreign nationals working in construction sites of power plants, roads and bridges across the country.”Ensure security at the construction sites of important power plants, roads and bridges as well as residences of the foreigners,” he said while addressing the 2nd session of the Quarterly Crime Conference held at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday.Chaired by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, the meeting was attended by all commissioners of metropolitan police, Range DIGs, SPs and chiefs of different police units based in Dhaka.Meeting sources said the Home Minister praised the police force for its role in controlling recent militant activities saying that confidence in people’s minds have increased as the police showed its capability in tackling the militants of Gulshan, Sholakia and Kalyanpur. “Patriotism, efficiency and professionalism exhibited by police in controlling militancy in recent times have been admired not only in the country but also in the international arena,” he said. The Home Minister asked the law enforcers to continue their efforts to free the country from militancy and terrorism. “I hope you (police) must succeed in curbing militant activity. ” He said, “People are by your side. Besides, friendly countries have already shown interest to support building your capacity.” In his addresses, IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque said police took the task of curbing militancy as a challenge. Police have to be more vigilant to face the challenge, he added. The police chief asked his officials to help build a social movement against militancy and terrorism by means of community policing. “Get united against militancy,” he said. The IGP ordered the SPs at district level to regularly monitor the investigation process of the cases.The meeting reviewed the overall crime situation across the country in the last three months between April 1 and June 30 this year. The meeting was told that 46,266 cases were recorded in different police stations across the country in the 2nd quarter of the current year which is lower compared to that of the same period of last year. A total of 47,736 cases were filed between April 1 and June 30 in 2015.The number of cases related to incidents of dacoity, kidnapping, burglary and road accidents have been decreased in the time, whereas incidents of clashes, rapes as well as repression on children and women increased compared to that of the same period last year.
