Strawberry farming getting popular in Gaibandha

Farming of strawberry, a juicy and succulent fruit, is getting more popular among the farmers of Sadullapur upazila in the district day by day for being a highly profitable crop.
Upazila agriculture office sources said over 50 bighas of land owned by 30 farmers of Edilpur village of the upazila have been brought under the strawberry farming during the current season.
Harvesting of strawberry is going on in full swing and the red juicy and nutritious fruit is being supplied to posh markets including Karwan Bazaar in the capital for sale.
Per kg of strawberry is being sold between Taka 100 to 150 depending on its quality and yield, said farmer Biplob Kumar of the village.
Oliur Rahman, sub assistant agriculture officer of Edilpur block of the upazila, said strawberry cultivation is as easy as growing potato or eggplant.
Saplings can be planted in rows during the period between November and December every year and the plants start flowering within one month of plantation and fruits can be collected till March, he said.
The strawberry farming had created working opportunities to over 300 poor men particularly the women of the locality, he added.
Associate professor and head of Botany department of Gaibandha Government College Zibon Kumar Saha said strawberry is packed with health benefits compared to fruits like apple, orange and bananas as it has the highest amount of nutrients.
Upazila agriculture officer Obaidur Rahman Mondal said strawberry farming is gradually becoming popular among the farmers here as its cultivation is easier and more profitable than other crops.
Deputy Director of department of agriculture extension M. Aminul Islam said as there has been a bright prospect of farming strawberry here, necessary measures had been taken to expand its farming in other parts of the district next seasons.
Construction work of fire station begins
Construction work of much awaited Fire Service and Civil Defense Station (FSCDS) has begun at Shaghata upazila headquarters in the district recently amid much enthusiasm to the locals.
Public Works Department (PWD) is implementing the work at a cost of Taka 1.90 crore under a project funded by Government of Bangladesh and the work would be completed by June, 2016, said an official of the department.

formally inaugurated the work by laying down the foundation stone of the building and unveiling a plaque at noon as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion deputy speaker and local lawmaker Advocate Rabbi said the government led by Sheikh Hasina took different development schemes to reach the existing facilities of the state to the doorsteps of the common people including rural ones.
Accordingly, the FSCDS is being constructed at College Road of the upazila headquarters (Bonarpara) to save the properties of the people here from fire incident side by side with rescuing the people from any mishap, deputy speaker also said.
