A shoal of hilsa, known for its impressive migration and return to rivers from the bay, has somehow made their way to a pond in Shariatpur Sadar upazila.
This rare incident has generated a great interest among locals.
For the first time on March 4, some hilsa were caught by Habib Madbar, a resident of Angaria union parishad of the upazila, from his family pond, which is adjacent to a canal of the Arial Kha River.
The man could not believe his own eyes when the hilsa came to the sight along with some other fishes during a fish haul in the pond.
Later, the fish was sent to Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) in Chandpur.
On Monday, officials of Fisheries Department visited the pond for further investigation into the matter. A haul across the pond in their presence produced some hilsa of different sizes again.
