Storm damages hundreds of houses, crop fields

Hundreds of thatched houses and vast areas of crop fields were damaged as a devastating storm accompanied by rain and hail lashed different areas of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district on Saturday evening.
Sources said rain and hailstorm which began at around 7 pm continued for over half an hour also damaged a huge quantity of fruit bearing litchi, mango and jackfruit trees, maize fields, pumpkin fields, vegetables and standing Boro paddy that started bearing sheaf in many areas of the upazila.
The most affected areas include Imadpur, Mirzapur, Balarhat, Vangni, Pairaband and Khoragachh union in the upazila, sources said.
Saiful Mia, a farmer of Khoragachh area under the upazila told The Financial Express that storm caused havoc in his area. His thatched houses were damaged by the storm. Storm also destroyed many mango buds in his orchard, he further said.
Sobhan Mia of Fakirerhat village said he cultivated maize on one bigha of land but the storm and hail damaged most of his crops.
A number of farmers who cultivated mango, litchi and jackfruit said that hailstorm had shattered their hopes as huge quantities of immature fruits were damaged during the storm.
