THE relentless attacks on children are nothing but the attacks on the future of the globe. Monday’s suicide bombing in a Nigerian school that killed at least 48 students and wounded several others is nothing but the continuation of killing children in Gaza, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and even in the United States. Undeniably, the children are the main victims of war. Nowadays, the militants and extremist groups are victimizing the children, mainly girls. Despite prevailing several international conventions, the world powers are continuously losing their ability to protect the future generations from the arrogance of adults. It is unfortunate and a real threat to future generations.
News agencies said a suicide bomber attack in a government Science Technical School at Potiskum in Yobe State killed 48 students and injured many more while some 2,000 students had gathered for weekly assembly. Earlier in the late April, militant group Boko Haram abducted 230 girls from their boarding school and the world did nothing except launch a campaign #SaveOurGirls, which flaunted the lack of integrity of the world leaders. The failure to free the abducted 230 girls emboldened Boko Haram to carry out a suicide bombing at the school. World leaders are simply allowing the future generations to die helplessly.
In Gaza, Israeli military killed 448 children and injured 2,502 during their August-September genocide. As Israel claimed it was targeting “terror sites,” its first victim was a ten-year-old child in Gaza City. The UN described the killing of sleeping children as a disgrace to the world and accused Israel of a serious violation of international law after shelling schools in Gaza. Prominent philosopher Noam Chomsky said when Israel is on “good behaviour,” they kill more than two Palestinian children every week but the world is in hibernation. And in Syria after the civil war break out in the early 2011, a total of 20,848 children died in the conflict by August 2014, according to independent research. Still the number of corpses of children is increasing.
In the US and European countries, the doctrine of liberalism and pursuit of happiness encourage goons to kill several school kids in every year. School shooting emerged as the annual event in these liberal societies. Series of school shooting is almost a routine there. The attacks are not linked with militancy or war but simply with the distorted whims of the killer, which may have originated from family and social deprivation or a superfluity of wealth.
To sustain the existence of human society the future generation should be protected first. These angel-like kids are ignorant of the power, politics, or race problems among nationals, ethnic or religious groups. Unless, the adults themselves protect the children from the wrath of war or militant cruelty and enable a safer world, posterity will not forgive us.
