Stop illicit transfer of money

Different rights groups at a rally in the city on Tuesday urged the major parties to reach a ‘political consensus’ instead of the blame game on the issue of illicit financial transfer abroad.
They also urged the government to publish white paper on the issue and initiate steps for bilateral agreements with Switzerland and other countries to stop illegal capital flight out of the country.
Led by EquityBD, the right-based organizations — Online Knowledge Society, Unnayan Dhara Trust, Coastal Development Partnership, Jatiya Shramik Jote,
Development Synergy Institute, Bangladesh Krishok Federation, Bangladesh Bhumihin Samity and Bangladesh Agriculture Labour Federation — held the rally in front of the National Press Club.
Moderated by Mostafa Kamal Akanda of EquityBD, it was addressed among others by Syed Aminul Haque of EquityBD, Subol Sarkar of Bhumihin Samity, Golam Sarwar of Bangladesh Agricultural Labour Federation, Badrul Alam of Bangladesh Krishok Federation and Aminur Rasul Babul of Unnayan Dhara Trust.
The organizations, in their written statement, said that the illicit financial flow from Bangladesh to other countries is much easier than sending money through official channels.
When the illicit financial flow from developed countries to Switzerland is a record low rate, the same from the poor countries like Bangladesh is increasing day by day.
According to the principles of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Switzerland offered Bangladesh to sign Double Taxing Avoidance and Agreement (DTAA) in 2007, but the then government didn’t show any interest in this regard. It is a shame for the nation, speakers at the rally said.
They said that the poor migrant workers send money from abroad and the poor garment workers earned foreign currencies and enriched the remittance, but some corrupt political leaders and bureaucrats transferred those hard-earned foreign currencies through illicit ways. “They are pushing the country to ruination”.
In this backdrop, they said that law and agreements might help reduce the illicit capital transfer out of the country. The political parties primarily must stop confrontational politics in this regard, they added.
