Stop crimes during Ramzan: IGP

Staff Reporter :The Inspector General of Police (IGP), AKM Shahidul Hoque, on Sunday ordered the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to stop crimes like extortion, snatching and kidnapping during Ramzan and Eid.  He also instructed the law enforcers to intensify the drive to arrest the offenders at any cost to help people celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr festival smoothly. The IGP said gave the directives at a close-door meeting held in this connection at the Police Headquarters in city in the afternoon.The meeting was called following the recent increase of mugging incident, especially by the agyan party, extortion at bus terminals, snatching and shop lifting. Shahidul Hoque said the cop members should enhance their vigilance duringRamzan and Eid as criminals flex their muscles right before of Eid festival as more economic transactions are made during the period. DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia informed the meeting that the police have recently detained a large number of criminal gangs and the arrest drive will continue till the Eid holydays. Besides, he said, the DMP has decided to tighten the security measures and traffic management system across the country ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. The DMP boss termed committing some crimes as ‘simple’ in a mega city like Dhaka where more than two crore people live. He also claimed that the DMP has already succeeded in unveiling the crimes. Additional police forces will remain deployed at different bus and launch terminals and railway stations to protect the travelers from pickpocket and Agyan party gangs, he said.He said a large number of markets and shopping malls will be brought under closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the city and also country’s different other places for security.Law enforcing agencies will also patrol the streets till late night to provide security to the mall-goers and the devotees who will offer tarawih prayers, he added. DIG (operations) Choudhury Abdullah Al Mamun, DMP Additional Commissioner Maruf Hasan, Additional DIG (special crimes) Md Jahirul Islam Bhuyan, DMP Joint Commissioner Moniril Islam and others high officials of law enforcing agencies were present at the meeting.
