The High Court (HC) on Thursday ordered the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka to stop all kinds of grabbing and construction work in the canals identified by the Dhaka District Administration immediately.
The DC has also been asked to submit a report in the HC with details of steps taken to recover those canals or water bodies within two weeks.The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order and issued a Suo Moto rule after a report published in a Bengali daily on October 24 under the banner of “Dhakar Khale 248 Dhokolder” (Dhaka canals’ 248 gabbers).
In the rule, the HC asked the authorities concerned to explain as to why they should not be directed to recover the canals, published in the report, from the land grabbers and the organizations.
Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, Local Government Secretary, Housing and Public Works Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Managing Director of WASA, Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka North and South City Corporations, Rajuk Chairman, Deputy Commissioner and Police Super of Dhaka district and the others have been made respondents. The court fixed November 12 as the next date for further hearing.
