Being hit by an oil tanker MT Samiya -2, a Narayanganj bound stone laden ship named MV Soyaiyyaba Munshi Express developed cracks and it sank in the Meghna river near Puran Bazar Horishava area in Chandpur town at 9 pm on Thursday.
The stone laden ship with huge quantity, about 1200 tons of stones , and 10 staffs on board was going to Kanchon, Narayanganj from Mongla via Chandpur . Staff Sagir Hossain, 30, and driver Mohiuddin,32, said, when it was crossing Puranbazar Horishava area in Chandpur town, due to the high waves and strong current , an oil tanker- MT Samiya -2 suddenly hit our ship and it developed cracks at the deck and sank in the turbulent waves of the river within a few minutes. We all staffs jumped with a loud cry in chorus in the turbulent river saying ‘ Allah save us, save us Allah’. Then the local fishing boats passing by us run by engines at once came forward and saved us all one by one from drowning. On getting information, River Thana Police led by OC Abu Taher Bhuiyan also rushed and helped us all. He told this correspondent that none drowned. All are saved by the grace of Allah.
