Ben Stokes’ maiden ODI century helped the English set a challenging target of 310 for Bangladesh in the first match of the three-match series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Friday.
The visitors posted the figure playing 50 overs riding on the 4th wicket stand of 153 runs in 26.3 overs between centurion Ben Stokes and debutant Ben Duckett.
The 4th pair carried the team total to 216/4 in 39 overs from 63/3 in 12.3 overs that was broken by pacer Shafiul Islam. Duckett was bowled out after scoring 60 off 78 balls with six boundaries.
Stokes continued his composure with skipper Jos Buttler in the 5th pair for his century off 100 balls that witnessed eight boundaries and four sixes before he was caught by Sabbir Rahman off skipper Mashrefe Bin Mortaza’s bowling at 230/5 in 41.3 overs.Stokes got life twice in the innings while Duckett once due to Bangladesh’s poor fielding in the middle in between 30th to 37th over.
Buttler, who elected to bat first after winning the toss to discharge his first ODI captaincy for the side, played a camio of 63 off 38 balls, including three boundaries, and was caught by Mosaddek Hossain off all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s bowling at 308/7 in 49.4 overs.
Bangladesh displayed a good check-and-balanced fielding from the beginning of the innings, conceding 29 runs in 5 overs, and pacer Shafiul Islam made the first breakthrough for the Tigers departing English opening batsman James Vince at 41/1 in 7.2 overs. Skipper Mashrafe assisted Shafiul with a catch to get the wicket. JM Vince was out for 16 off 20 balls, including one boundary.
All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan bagged the big wicket of opener Jason Roy caught by Sabbir Rahman at 61/2 in 11.2 ovrs. Roy stayed for 41 off 40 balls, involving five boundaries and one six.
Number four batsman Jonny Bairstow was run out for duck after facing three balls when the team’s total was 63/3 in 12.3 overs. The English side reached the 100-run mark in 19.5 overs with a single taken by Ben Stokes off Mosharraf Hossian bowling.
Mashrafe, Shakib and Shafiul Islam took two wickets each for Bangladesh for 52, 59 and 59 runs respectively.
