Stocks open week down as major sectors dip

Stock markets today opened the week with downward trend as most of the major sectors closed lower as the investors sold shares fearing further fall.
The major losing sectors were bank, financial institutions, engineering, ceramics and tannery industries. A total of 169 securities of the large-cap group incurred loss due to the lower activities.
The broader index DSEX of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) finished the first session of the week 16.92 points down at 5,309.47. The Shariah DSES and the DS30 also followed it the same trend with 4.42 points down at 1,228.80 and with 1.62 points down at 1,901.36.
The daily turnover in value at DSE increased to Taka 296.02 crore from Thursday’s Taka 284.19 crore. But, the volume trading shares fell to 5.91 crore shares from the previous session 6.38 crore shares.
The losers took a marginal lead over the gainers as among the traded 341 issues at DSE, 107 closed higher against 193 losing issues.
The top five gaining companies were Asian Insurance, AIBL1STMF, Pioneer Insurance, NTC and HR Textile while the major losing securities were Brac Bank, Islamic Finance, Monno Ceramics, Kay&Que and Legacy Footwear.
Fortune Shoes topped the turnover list followed Monno Ceramics, BSCCL, UPGDCL and Square Pharma.
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also opened the week down, with its major CASPI index closing ended 19.08 points down at 16,288.81. The volume trading in CSE was 30.43 lakh shares and the trade value was Taka 9.09 crore.
