Steps underway to remove pollution of rivers

Environment and Forests Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud said the government is sincerely working to remove pollution of rivers and water bodies around the Dhaka city.
“As rivers and water bodies are closely linked to environment and economy, these should be freed from all sorts of pollution for the sake of greater interest of the people,” he said this while speaking at a symposium organized by Bangladesh National Committee of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on the first instant at the Jatiya Press Club here, an official release said. Vice Chair of IUCN Dr Nilufar Banu, environment and water experts and officials, among others, addressed the symposium with Chair of Bangladesh National Committee of IUCN Members Hasna Jasim Uddin in the chair. Anisul said Bangladesh has already achieved international recognition for its pioneering role in protecting environment through taking various effective and time-befitting initiatives.
He said, “We are actively considering setting up Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) beside those rivers which are polluted by industrial wastes.” At a meeting, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Water Resource Ministry recommended to remove water pollution of the rivers around the Dhaka city. The progress report of different projects for freeing rivers from water pollution was placed at the meeting.
Chairman of the committee Ramesh Chandra Sen presided over the meeting, according to an official release.
Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, State Minister for Water Resources Mohammad Nazrul Islam, AKM Fazlul Haque, Rezwan Ahammad Toufiq, Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury, Anupum Shahjahan Joy, Selina Jahan Lita attended the meeting.
