The inhabitants of six villages including traditional Jatraput haat, Garuhara, Baldipara, Farajipara,Char Parbatipur, Ghoneshampur and char Jatrapur under Jatrapur union of Kurigram Sadar upazila brought out a demonstration on Wednesday noon and paraded main roads of the town demanding steps to save six villages from river erosion.
They submitted memorandum to the Kurigram Deputy Commissioner and Executive Engineer of Water Development Board . The demonstration was organised by Kurigram River Erosion Protection Committee. People of river erosion prone areas at Jatrapur came to Kurigram town walking ten kilometers on foot and formed a human chain for an hour on Kurigram-Rangpur Highway near central Shahid Minar at noon. President of Kurigram River Erosion Protection Committee Shafi Khan was presided in the assemble where Chairman of Jatrapur union council Abdul Gafur, former Chairman of Kurigram municipality Kaziul Islam, Principal Rasheduzzaman Babu, eminent journalist Shafi Khan and Shamol Bhoumik spoke among others.
The speakers said although five kilometer embankment was damaged last year which was not repaired till now. Consequently more than three thousand families became homeless. In addition a vast tract of cropland, trees, schools and mosques were eroded. They also announced that hunger strike will be observed in front of Water Development Board if necessary measures will not be taken to protect river erosion within 15 days.
