“The government has taken a number of steps to stop child marriage in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and they will come into effect from next year,” State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki said this on Tuesday while speaking at a gathering at the Dhaka University’s Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.
The state minister said the government had targeted two issues: one, stopping child marriage and two, rehabilitation of street children.
“They have to be attained if Bangladesh was to realise the goal of attaining upper middle-income country status by 2021,” she said.
The minister was speaking at a seminar organized by an NGO, Plan International, to disseminate its findings from a recent study “Getting the Evidence: Asia Child Marriage Initiative”.
