Steps taken to send more women workers abroad

The government has taken initiatives to send more women workers to different countries including Japan, Russia, Mauritius, Maldives and Hong Kong.
Besides, several developed countries expressed keen interest in taking skilled and semi-skilled women housemaids from Bangladesh. As many as 82,510 female workers went to overseas till August this year.
“Different countries expressed keen internet to receive women workers from Bangladesh. A delegation of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry has already visited Japan in this regard,” Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Acting Secretary Dr Nomita Halder told BSS on Tuesday.
She said a 4-mmeber delegation also visited Russia to send women workers to the country.
“The government has set a target to send 8,00,000 workers to overseas this year. A total of 6,90,046 workers went to overseas till August this year,” she said.
Among the workers, 3,92,602 went to Saudi Arabia, Halder said, adding that of them, a total of 55,298 women were sent to the KSA as housemaids this year.
Besides, 13,963 women workers went to Jordan while 6,703 to Oman.
The acting secretary said the government is providing trainings including foreign language courses at 34 training centres.
Halder, in a discussion of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, recently said Bangladesh Embassy to Saudi Arabia has established special shelter centre for tortured and fraudulence-victim women.
She said the ministry has taken special rehabilitation programmes for expatriate workers who returned home.
