The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has said urgent steps are needed to prevent the spread of Aedes mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya among people.
It said the Aedes mosquito-borne diseases have been increasing during this rainy season. About 680 dengue infected patients have been reported from
different hospitals in the capital from January to July 18 this year. “We are suggesting the people to remain conscious and keep their houses clean to curb Aedes mosquito-borne diseases as there are fears that Dengue and Chikungunya diseases may spread during this rainy season,” ASM Alamgir, Senior Scientific Officer of the IEDCR, told the media on Thursday.
The IEDCR, a unit of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has already taken steps to make people alert of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya, he added.
Earlier in a release issued on Wednesday, IEDCR Director Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora said, “There is a fear that Aedes mosquito-borne diseases may spread this year due to heavy rainfall.”
“The divisions concerned of the Health Directorate and the Health Ministry like IEDCR, Disease Control Division and Bureau of Health Education are deeply observing the current condition and have taken necessary steps,” the IEDCR director said.
