‘Steps taken to make rivers around Dhaka free from pollution’

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday said the government has taken initiatives to make the rivers around the Dhaka city free from pollution and ensure navigability through carrying out dredging works.
“The rivers around the capital city are the life line for the city dwellers…we should make the rivers pollution free and livable through increasing navigability,” he said while presiding over a meeting on ‘making master plan for Karnaphuly river and the rivers around the Dhaka city’ at the conference room of Local Government Division here.
Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Hossain Khokan and Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, among others, attended the meeting.
Mosharraf said once upon a time the Thames river was more polluted than the Buriganga. But the Themes river is now free from pollution, he added.
