Expatriates Welfare and Oversees Employment Minister Nurul Islam BSc on Sunday said the drive against illegal Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia has been stopped following an
initiative taken by the government.
“As per their given time, the illegal migrants have the opportunity to get legalised by December. They had started the drive against the illegal migrants abruptly. Later, they stopped the drive when the Bangladesh government took initiative,” he said.
The minister was speaking at a seminar titled ‘Labour Market Situation in Malaysian and Middle East countries: Present and Future Challenges’, orgainised by Reporters for Bangladeshi Migrants (RBM), at the conference room of the ministry.
The Bangladesh government did not create any syndicate for sending workers to Malaysia, but the Malaysia government has approved 10 recruiting agencies of Bangladesh, said Nurul Islam.
“We had sent a list of 1,100 recruiting agencies to the Malaysian government for approval,” he said.
The government is working to open labour market in Japan and Russia, he added.
Selim Reza, director general of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), said, “The labour market is expanding day by day as the government has succeed in sending 5.54 lakh people in the last six and half months while it would be 8.75 lakh in one year. If it continues like this then it will cross 10 lakh, breaking all the records.”
Dr CR Abrar, executive director of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), said, “The main problem in the migration sector is excess migration cost and the syndicate system in the labour market. We have to take necessary steps for stopping the syndicate system for saving the labour market.”
Riyazul Islam, former secretary general of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (Baira), said, “Some 1.2 lakh people have been waiting for their medical test to go to Malaysia, though only 10,000 people have been sent to the country. The total expenditure for migration to Malaysia for a person is Tk 37,000 but they deposited Tk 1.2 lakh.”
Presided over by Feroz Mannan, president of Reporters for Bangladeshi Migrants (RBM), the seminar was moderated by its general secretary Masudul Hoque. RBM executive member Mohsinul Karim presented the keynote paper at the seminar.
