National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) on Tuesday has urged the government to implement its 14- point recommendations immediately for Eid holidaymakers’ safe movement on roads and waterways.
The NCPSRR president Mohamed Shahid Mian and its general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey made the demand in a statement. Among the 14 recommendations, seven points are for road safety while the rest for river safety, the release said.
The seven recommendations for roads are: Ensuring tight security in all important bus terminals, including capital Dhaka, across the country and conducting mobile court in 24 hours to resist ticket black marketing and extra fare collection, taking strict steps to stop reckless driving and illegal overtaking on the long routes, involving executive magistrates of all district administrations for conducting mobile court in the national highways, inter-district roads and regional passages to stop all kinds of vehicles, including passengers carrier services, having no registration, fitness certificate and route permit, delegation of power to the district and police administrations to avoid mobile phone in the running vehicles, carrying passengers on bus-roofs and trucks and taking action against drivers with fake licenses.
They also asked for eviction of illegal establishments on Dhaka-Chattagram, Tangail Sylhet, Paturia and Shimulia routes to avoid intolerable gridlock of these highways, increasing of law enforcers’ activities, including mobile court, at Shimulia and Paturia ferry ghat to resist anarchy and mismanagement there for the smooth movement of southwest region-bound people from Dhaka and banning strictly of all kinds of three-wheeler vehicles, including auto-rickshaws and easy bikes, on the national highways and inter-district roads.
The seven recommendations for safe shipping movement include: Beginning the function of mobile courts across the country to stop all kinds of illegal and unfit vessels, including launches and water buses, involving district and police administrations of coastal belt to shipping safety activities, delegation of power to executive magistrates of coastal districts, ensuring toilets and sufficient water facilities in all launch terminals across the country and conducting mobile courts in all river ports.
They asked for banning all kinds of small vessels, including risky launches, on Shimulia-Kathalbari and Paturia-Doulatdia routes of the Padma, strictly stopping all kinds of cargo ships, including sand carrier and oil tanker, plying at nights and forecasting weather bulletin in every hour through radio and television and 24 hours through loud speakers in all launch terminals and ghats.
