Stay on mobile court operation order gets 2-week extension

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday extended for two weeks the stay on a High Court order that declared the operation of mobile courts by the executive magistrates illegal.
A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha adjourned the hearing considering a time petition
filed by the government. Following the latest decision of the apex court, the Executive Magistrate can conduct mobile courts during this period.
Hearing three writ petitions, the High Court declared illegal the operation of mobile courts by the executive magistrates. Later, in view of a stay plea on behalf of the State, the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division adjourned the High Court verdict till May 18 and sent it to the regular bench for decision.
The matter was placed in the Appellate Division for hearing on May 21 and the court stayed the hearing till July 2. On Tuesday the court adjourned the order for two weeks.
On behalf of the State, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam sought time for four weeks, but the court granted for two weeks. Lawyer Hasan MS Azim stood for the writ petitioner.
