Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the third T20 International (T20I) against Sri Lanka and at least part of the ODI series after sustaining a thumb injury.
Starc suffered a laceration to his left index finger during the first T20I in Colombo and required six stitches Starc was struggling to complete his full quota of four overs but he somehow managed it after some on-field treatment.
Jhye Richardson, who replaced Starc in the second T20I and took three wickets, will remain in the squad for the five ODIs
Starc removed three Sri Lankan batters – Pathum Nissanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Dushmantha Camera in the first T20I while giving away just 26 runs. Australia sealed the T20I series with a three-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Wednesday and Australia is unlikely to risk Starc in the ODIs if he is not fully recovered, with the first of two Tests in Galle starting on July 29.
