Experts at a participatory discussion here unequivocally called for giving utmost emphasis on following precise standards in every spheres of life for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In order to achieve these goals, the cooperation of various public and private partners, the use of all the available tools, including the conformity assessment and international standards, is urgently required.
Regional Office of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institutions (BSTI) organised the discussion at its office conference hall in observance of the World Standard Day-2021 on Thursday.
The theme for this year’s World Standards Day is “Shared vision for a better world Standards for sustainable development goals”.
The theme aims to address social imbalances, develop a sustainable economy and slow the rate of climate change. Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Dr Ziaul Haque and President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Muhammad Muniruzzaman addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with BSTI Regional Director Engineer Selim Reja in the chair.
Professor Shafiul Islam from the Department of Public Administration in Rajshahi University gave an illustration on the day’s significance during his keynote presentation.
He told the meeting that World Standards Day is observed annually on October 14 all over the world to create awareness about the significance of standardization to the global economy among regulators, consumers, and industry.
The process of standardisation is an important tool for facilitating trade and overcoming technical challenges.
Professor Islam also said standards have been important to every individual in the world and we all have been raised with this concept.
World Standards Day 2021 is also a means of paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts who develop voluntary technical agreements that are published as international standards.
In his remarks, Dr Ziaul Haque said emphasis has been placed on eliminating social imbalances, sustainable economic development and limiting the scale of climate change in order to achieve the SDGs.
He said the present government under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing gigantic development programmes for achieving the SDGs within the stipulated time.
