UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Saturday urged the government to stand beside the oppressed and displaced Rohingya people of Myanmar. “We every day find news in newspapers and on the Facebook how Muslim Rohingya people are being brutally tortured and burnt to death in Myanmar. Though Bangladesh’s 90 percent population is Muslims, its government is least bother about it,” said BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
Speaking at a discussion, he further said the people who are fleeing from Myanmar to save their lives are not allowed to come to Bangladesh. The killing of Muslims should be stopped through discussions with Myanmar authorities. If you (govt) can’t do that, give Rohingyas shelter in Bangladesh temporarily. We hope the government will stand beside them.”
Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal arranged the programme at Nayapaltan’s Bhasani auditorium, marking BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s 52nd birthday.
Mosharraf said the silence of the Bangladesh government over Rohingya issue cannot be accepted as it is a Muslim majority country.
He came down hard on Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader for accusing BNP of obliterating democracy, saying people only laughed at his impractical comment.
The BNP leader said BNP restored democracy after 1975 Baksal rule and did the same ousting autocratic Ershad-regime in 1919, but it never destroyed democracy.
