Blockade, hartal: Stalemate situation prevailing in Chaktai-Khatungonj commercial hub

Trade transactions have lowered to maximum extents in wholesale market of the port city.
The stalemate situation has been prevailing in the Chaktai-Khatungonj, commercial hub of Chittagong since enforcement of siege programme of BNP-led opposition alliance .
The daily normal trade transactions in the hub before the political turmoil was Tk.1000 cr to 1200 crores which now declined to Tk.300 to 400 crores .
Khatungonj Trade Association sources said, the traders are deprived of transactions of minimum Tk.800 crores per day.
While contacted General secretary of Khatungonj Trade association Sagir Ahmed told The New Nation that there are major 4000 traders including importers, hoarders and wholesalers in this commercial hub of which only 25% businesses are running now and the remaining 75% business houses remain stranded. Sources said so long the opposition programs will linger, the extents of loss will increase gradually.
 He said supply of essential commodities lessened bty maximum extents fearing the torching of transports on the way. He further said the average transactions in this business hub previously was Tk. 1000 to 1200 crores which now decreased to tk.300 to 400 crores per day.
 Sources said in last one week about 1800 transports laden with essential commodities entered in Chaktai-Khatungonj hub whereas previously in one week atleast 40 thousand cargo trucks entered in the hub. A wholesale trader of Khatungonj told that one cargo truck from Bengpole to Khatungonj wa.s paid Tk.25000 to 30000 as fare but now demanding more than tk.50 thousand causing the cost of the commodities.
The wholesaler of onion , garlic, ginger, are seen sitting idle in respective business houses lack of supply of the essential commodities from different land ports of the country and the suppliers end from northern parts of the country which caused price hike of commodities in retail markets, sources said.
