Stakeholders’ role to stop child marriage stressed

The divisional launch of awareness campaign on ‘Girls Get Equal campaign and discussion on role of respective stakeholders to stop child marriage in Rangpur ‘ was held at Begum Rokeya Auditorium in Rangpur on Sunday .
K MTariqul Islam, Divisional Commissioner of Rangpur Division inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest. Kowsar Parvin, Deputy Director Office of the District Women Affairs, Md. Akhteruzzaman, Divisional Director, DSHE, Khondokar Md. Iqbal Hossain, Divisional Director, Primary Education, Rawshan Alam, District Legal Aid Officer, Iqbal Hossain, Assistant Director, Social Welfare, Ashish Kumar Bakshi the Divisional Manager of Plan International Bangladesh were present as special guest while Humayun Khaled the Director – Field Operations of RDRS Bangladesh chaired the event.
During the event, there was a presentation on the current context of child marriage and girls’ equality in the country and the ground reality of Rangpur. Four young women activists have shared their stories on how they fought back the violence they experienced in their early age and now working to raise awareness among the girls like them. There was an open discussion session where participants shared their views to stop child marriage and the way of achieving girls’ equality in family and society.
Among other guests, government official from different departments, journalists, youth women, religious leaders, teachers, NGO and media representatives participated in the event.Girls Get Equal is a 5 year long global, youth-led, social change campaign facilitated by Plan International. It is about ensuring every girl and young woman has power over her own life and can shape the world around her. It is about power, leadership and youth-led action to advance girls’ rights and gender equality. The campaign focuses and demands girls to be equal in power alike men, have equal freedom online as well as in public space where they are fearless to express themselves. The campaign will also create opportunity for equal representation of girls in media.
