A large portion of the Moulvibazar Stadium’s boundary has been demolished for the wedding of Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali’s daughter.
More than twenty feet of the north wall between the stadium and Water Development Board was razed to ensure cars of the guests have easy access to the premises where the daughter will be married.
Speaking at a view-exchange held at Moulvibazar Circuit House on Wednesday for the wedding, Awami League leader Ali urged journalists to assist in making the event a success.
Five canopies have been erected on the field, a visit to the stadium showed. One has been thrown up for the groom’s relatives and guests, one for the bride and women, another for guests coming in from seven Upazilas, one more for Hindu guests and another is assigned for guests miscellaneous. Sand has been poured on the muddy, north part of the field. Some 22 feet of the west wall next to the stadium’s north exit is gone.
“The request to use the stadium was done using valid procedure,” said Moulvibazar District Sports Association General Secretary Misbahur Rahman. He, however, refused to comment on the razed wall. Executive Engineer of Water Development Board’s Moulvibazar office, Faizur Rab’s phone was switched off.
“We began arranging the wedding at the stadium with permission,” the minister said. “We are not causing damage to the stadium. We are actually making it better by filing puddles with sand,” Ali further claimed. The event was moved to the stadium to avoid the town’s traffic, he said. “A part of the wall has been demolished so guests can go in and out easily. There was a lane there once. We’ll repair it.” The minister’s family and party men have been inviting guests for a week. As many as 15,000 invitations were said to have been sent out. Siraj Miah, the decorator who makes canopies for all of the minister’s family events, said his team had been working away from last week. Ali’s second daughter Syeda Sanjida Sharmin will be married to Mosharraf Patwari, son of Ibrahim Patwari from Lakhsmipur’s Srirampur village on Thursday.
