A Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee was killed in a running bus on way to the examination hall in the capital’s Mohakhali on Tuesday. The deceased identified, as Sakibul Islam, 15, and son of Jahangir Alam, was a student of Banani Bidya Niketon School.
Sakibul was going to the Shaheed Ramij Uddin Cantonment School in the Banani Cantonment area to take part in the English first paper examination by a bus of Binimoy Paribahan, said Banani police. His head was several inches outside the window.
The tragic death took place around 9:30am at Mohakhali Amtoli after Sakibul’s head banged against a lamp-post, the police said.
Critically injured Sakibul was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he was declared dead, said Bachchu Miah, In-charge of the DMCH Police Camp.
Witness Sagor Ahmed Bhuiyan, owner of Siam Paint and Hardware Store, which is few yards away from the incident site, said that the boy’s head was stuck between the pole and the bus.
“I heard a banging sound and suddenly noticed a boy’s head stuck between a bus and a lamppost. He was shouting – brother, please save me.”
“We rushed to the bus. If the driver had driven the bus backwards, the boy could have been saved. But the stubborn driver kept on running the vehicle,” Sagor said.
At one stage the driver fled the scene.
Visiting the spot, this correspondent noticed that particular lamppost was a bit closer to the road posing threat to careless passengers.
