Sri Lanka took the control in the first Test over Bangladesh after declared their second innings making 274 for the loss of six wickets on the fourth day at Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Friday.
Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka piled up a massive 494 in the first innings on the second day (Wednesday).
In reply, Bangladesh made 312 in the first innings on the third day (Thursday).
Later, Bangladesh were at 67 for the loss of none before the bails were drawn for the fourth day.
Bangladesh need another 390 runs to win with 10 wickets remaining on the fifth and final day which is a daunting task for the tourists.
Opener Soumya Sarkar remained unbeaten with 53. His 47-ball innings was studded with six fours and a six. It was Sarkar’s third Test half century.
Tamim Iqbal remained unbeaten with 13 runs.
Sri Lanka made a good start in their second innings as their openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Upal Tharanga put on together 69 runs in the opening stand before Karunaratne was caught at the deep square leg by Mahmudullah Riyad off Taskin Ahmed.
Upal Tharanga hit a terrific 115. His 171-ball innings was decorated with 11 fours and two sixes. It was Tharanga’s third Test century.
After dismissal of Karunaratne, Tharanga and Kusal Mendis contributed together 65 runs for the second wicket partnership before Mendis (19) was caught at the square leg by Taskin Ahmed off Shakib Al Hasan when the hosts’ total was 134 for the loss of two wickets.
Tharanga and Dinesh Chandimal built another notable partnership. They added together 64 runs in the third wicket stand before Tharanga was bowled out by Mehedi Hasan Miraz when the home side’s score was 198 for the loss of three wickets.
Dinesh Chandimal remained unbeaten with 50. His 75-ball innings was belted with four fours. It was Chandimal’s 11th Test half century.
After departure of Tharanga, Asela Gunaratne came but he could stay at the crease for da short period as he (0) was bowled out by Shakib Al Hasan when Sri Lanka’s score was 199 for the loss of four wickets.
After removal of Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella (15) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Mehedi Hasan Miraz when the islanders’ total was 222 for the loss of five wickets.
After departure of Dickwella, Dinesh Chandimal and Dilruwan Perera produced together 52 runs for the sixth wicket stand before Perera was caught behind by Liton Das off Mustafizur Rahman when Sri Lanka’s score was 274 for the loss of six wickets.
Perera and Karunaratne added 33 and 32 runs respectively to the Sri Lanka total.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan bagged a pair of wickets each at the cost of 77 and 104 runs respectively.
Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket each for 24 and 32 runs respectively.

After departure of Dickwella, Dinesh Chandimal and Dilruwan Perera produced together 52 runs for the sixth wicket stand before Perera was caught behind by Liton Das off Mustafizur Rahman when Sri Lanka’s score was 274 for the loss of six wickets.
Perera and Karunaratne added 33 and 32 runs respectively to the Sri Lanka total.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan bagged a pair of wickets each at the cost of 77 and 104 runs respectively.
Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket each for 24 and 32 runs respectively.
