UNB, Gazipur :
A local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), who received bullet wounds in a clash during electioneering for the upcoming March 15 upazila election in Sreepur on Saturday, died at a city hospital on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Al Amin, 25, assistant general secretary of Sreepur thana unit of BCL and son of Abul Hossain, a resident of Ujilab village in the upazila.
Al Amin’s brother Alamgir Hossain said supporters of both AL-backed chairman candidate Iqbal Hossain Sabuj, also organising secretary of the party
district unit and the party’s rebel candidate Abdul Jalil gathered for mass contact in front of AL Sreepur upazila unit office on Saturday morning.
Men of the duo later brought out separate processions in the area around 11:00 am. At one stage, both the groups locked in a fierce clash that continued till 2:00 pm.
A chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups and over 20 gunshots were fired during the clash, leaving at least 30 people, including Al Amin and seven policemen injured.
Al Amin was rushed to Apollo Hospital in the capital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 11:30 pm on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh members have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
Police on Sunday arrested 14 people, including two gun-trotting ones, in connection with Saturday’s clash.
The officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station said they conducted drives in different places since Sunday morning and arrested them. The arrested include central Jubo League committee member Kafil Mondal Jewel, Kamrul Hasan, Mehedi, Yusuf Ali, Liton, Shipu, Mohammad Selim and Imran.
Of them, Quamrul and Mehedi were found brandishing firearms during the clash.
