Commemorating powerful leaders and mothers who break gender stereotypes with their everyday successes, Spreeha Bangladesh has celebrated International Mothers’ Day this year with the event “Championing Change: Celebrating Leadership and Motherhood” on Saturday ( May 13) at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Social Sciences Faculty, University of Dhaka, says a press release
Mahmud Hossain¸ Chairman, Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation, welcomed all to the event and thanked the Chief Guest Prof Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor, University of Dhaka and Guest of Honor Prof Mahfuza Khanam, President, World Teachers Federation.
The guest of honor in her speech said, “In a densely populated country like Bangladesh, we need more organizations like Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation”. The chief guest praised Spreeha’s principle – empathy. In his speech he said, “Being empathetic is a special skill we need to change the society. And Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation is doing a great job in making people empathetic through their programs and projects”.
With the objective of initiating a dialogue to understand the challenges faced by working mothers, the event brought in women who are frontrunners of their industries. The highlight of the event was a panel discussion with renowned personalities Sayeda Rizwana Hasan, leading environmental attorney and Chief Executive, BELA; Shwapna Bhowmick, Country Manager, Marks & Spencer; Rafiath Rashid Mithila, actress, singer and Head of Early Childhood Development and Girls’ Education, BRAC International and Nobonita Chowdhury, Editor, DBC News and Anchor, ‘Rajkahon- Nobonita Chowdhuryr shathe’ as the moderator.
Sayeda Rizwana Hasan, leading environmental attorney and Chief Executive, BELA, started the session with telling her daily lives how she managed her work and family at once. She suggested the attendees, “A leader does the work which s/he loves. A mother does not have any choice than being a leader.” Shwapna Bhowmick, Country Manager, Marks & Spencer, added that to have a well-established life, we have to have a goal and have to reach that goal. Both internal and external factors become barriers in our lives, but we have to create a mutual support system around us.
Rafiath Rashid Mithila, actress, singer and Head of Early Childhood Development and Girls’ Education, BRAC International told that motherhood is a choice and motherhood builds us as stronger leaders. As the moderator of the session, Nobonita Chowdhury, Editor, DBC News and Anchor, ‘Rajkahon- Nobonita Chowdhuryr shathe’, said that Spreeha Bangladesh is celebrating leadership and motherhood. With times, changes are coming. As a girl we have to have the power to say both yes and no. For girls, championing the world is not an option, it is a must.
In the question-answer session, panelists added that the hardest work is to change the society. To change the society, a support system for both boys and girls are a must. To get support from the family, everyone has to have a strong planning, determination, and self-respect. Constant negotiation with the surroundings to achieve and meet own potential can be a solution for all.
In the ending note, Tazin Shadid, CEO, Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation thanked everyone for attending the program and shared Spreeha’s journey with their adolescent girls’ leadership program “Progga”. He ended the session with a hope to inspire millions and motivate young individuals to adopt change and help educate on the necessity of redefining gender roles.
