Xinhua, Singapore :
Singapore’s Ministry of Transport announced Wednesday that it is setting up a committee to oversee the research, development and deployment of driverless vehicle technologies.
Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo said the ministry will be studying ways to harness the autonomous vehicle technology for Singapore in the coming decades.
The 17-member committee, headed by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport Pang Kin Keong, will provide leadership and guidance on the research, development and deployment of autonomous vehicle technology and concepts enabled by such technology.
They will also study the associated opportunities and challenges, the ministry said.
Other members of the committee include those from the relevant planning agencies and a number of international experts, academics and industry members.
There will be two workgroups to support the work of the committee. One will envision what autonomous vehicle-enabled towns in Singapore in the future could look like, recommend autonomous vehicle-enabled mobility concept plans for such towns, and chart a roadmap for implementation.
The second workgroup, chaired by Land Transport Authority Chief Executive Officer Chew Hock Yong, will focus on regulation and implementation, including determining a safety, regulatory and liability framework, and research and development and test-bedding of such technology and concepts in Singapore.
