A steering committee will work to promptly free the rivers around the capital from pollution, and illegal encroachment and increase their navigability. The Navy chief will lead the committee while ministries, departments and organisations concerned will work in coordination with it.
The decision was taken at a special meeting of the task force on protecting
navigability of rivers. Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan presided over the meeting, said a PID handout.
Food Minister Quamrul Islam, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, MP Sanjida Khanam, Shipping Secretary Ashoke Madhab Roy and Navy Chief Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed were, among others, present A strategy and work plan to check pollution and encroachment of the rivers around Dhaka city was presented at the meeting.
On July 24, Bangladesh Navy submitted a strategy to the government to this end, and a work plan was formulated in line with the strategy.
The meeting was informed that 60 percent industrial waste is the main reason behind the pollution of the rivers.
It was also told that around 45,00 tonnes of garbage of the city and 22 cubic liters of toxic tannery waste are dumped in the Buriganga River on an average every day, while around 7,159 kg industrial waste are dumped in the Turag River.
