A devastating fire broke out at a synthetic factory in the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) industrial area, Konabari in Gazipur district on Saturday morning.
The reason behind the fire and amount of loss could not be known immediately, said Akhtaruzzaman Liton, Deputy Assistant Director of Gazipur Fire Station.
The fire originated at Kader Synthetic Fibers Limited around 7:00am and soon engulfed the 1st floor of the building. As a result, cracks developed, the fire officials said. A total of 12 units of Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) doused the blaze after seven hours of frantic efforts, said FSCD Director (operation and maintenance) Major Shakil Newaj Khan. However, firefighters faced some soot of problems due to water shortage, he said.
The police, Rapid Action Battalion and local people helped the fire service personnel extinguishing fire, he added.
Major Shakil said, there was no causality, as all workers managed to come out of the factory.
The fire burnt about 10 to 12 thousand plastic bags. Meanwhile, at least eight garment factories near the burning factory were declared shut fearing workers’ unrest, the added.
Large numbers of law enforcement agencies personnel have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward situations, Rezaul Karim, Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Joydebpur Police Station said.
