The growers of spicy crops in the district are optimistic about achieving a good yield of their produce during the current season due to congenial weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs.
Sources said the farmers are getting good profit through the cultivation of the crops in recent years which is encouraging them to cultivate the crops on scale this season.
According DAE sources the atmosphere, moderate rainfall and soil of the region are also congenial to the farming of different varieties of spicy crops including ginger, turmeric, garlic, chilli, onion etc. Disappointed over price fall of paddy, maize and some other crops many farmers of the region are showing their enthusiasm in the cultivation of spices as the farming of such crops have become lucrative during last few years.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources about 10,000 hectares of lands are expected to bring der spice cultivation in 8 upazilas of the district during the current season and the farmers are expecting a bumper yield of their produce if the weather remains favourable.
Mothahar of Baniapara village in Taraganj upazila said he cultivated chilli on one bigha of land this season and has already earned Tk 20,000 as profit. He is expecting more dividends during the remaining part of the season.
Azizul another farmer of the same village told FE that he cultivated ginger on 20 decimals of land this year and is hopeful about attaining a good harvest and profit owing to its increasing market price. Shafikul, a farmer of Fulchauki village at upazila said presently he is preparing his land for onion cultivation. Within next 10-15 days he will sow seed of onion on his 25 decimals of land. DAE sources said the department has taken adequate measures to increase the farming and production of all varieties of spicy crops in order to decline dependency on import. DAE has been providing the growers with quality seeds, inputs and helping the farmers for the utilisation of modern technologies, sources added.
